That is why Dragon Ball Z Kai was created, but which version is better?  This can be a tough thing to weigh, so let us dissect some features one by one.  Dragon Ball Kai or Dragon Ball Z The original DBZ series was undoubtedly a phenomenon on an international scale because Dragon Ball Z Kai was created. If DragonBall Z were not a big hit, there wouldn't be any purpose in recreating it. But the question is - will Dragon Ball Z Kai surpass the original Dragon Ball Z? They were already a part of Dragon Ball, even before Goku became a Super Saiyan.  Number of Episodes/Seasons Dragon Ball Z episodes has a total of 291 parts which are depicted from the manga series. It took off after the last part of the DragonBall series, where Goku and Chichi got married. The first episode of Dragon Ball Z is part of the Raditz Saga, "Mini Goku is Just Precious!" This Uncut episode was aired on April 26, 1989. The final episode was aired on January 31, 1996, "Even Stronger!! Goku's Dream is Super-Huge". Several factors are omitted, even with the Japanese version, but Garlic Jr. remains the main antagonist of DBZ Kai, just like FBZ. Characters All of the casts in Dragon Ball Z are present up until the Frieza Saga since this is where DBZ Kai ended. Piccolo still ended up as his friend and Gohan's protector and teacher, the same as what source material tells. Number of Episodes/Seasons You can only watch DBZ Kai in 159 parts, mainly because they did not include filler episodes on what was aired. That is actually what the producers wanted. Also, it ended abruptly in the Freeza Saga, as it is called in Japan, which made it even shorter than the original anime version. It has more contrast (2), the reason why some say that the older version does not contain subtlety even if the storyline already requires it. You will definitely notice the difference between the two, but then again, it will always fall to the preference of the person watching it.  Soundtrack Dragon Soul is widely accepted worldwide as well as this is also a good representation of what the producers wanted for this animation revision. A couple of these are Goku's transformation into a Super Saiyan and the Majin Buu Saga. Though Frieza's fight against Goku is still very much present in this revision, many scenes are missing.  International Presence Comparing the two, DBZ Kai has a stronger international presence compared to DBZ itself. This does not follow through, that the original script was not a good one. The comparison of the technology used and the easy access to the revision series gives it an edge, although all this appreciation mostly comes from individuals who watched DBZ before.  Scene Fillers Fillers are not present in the Kai series, which in a way, is frustrating. Kai did not feature the moment when Yamcha used the Wolf Fang Fist or even when Piccolo and Goku learned how to drive. Since Kai was totally faithful to the manga narrative, these parts were omitted, even when initially aired in Japan. On the other hand, DBZ may have a lot of these, but it completed the plot completely.  Story Presentation If you watched Kai directly without seeing any of DBZ, you would find that the story is very precise, covering the triumphant wins over the evil opponents. They are trying to harm the earth and the universe. However, Dragon Ball Z started when the hero was still a boy. The entire narrative was laid out completely, even enhanced with some of the filler episodes that completed our hero's transformation.  Dialogues/Lines Surprisingly, Kai used dialogues from the manga series, which may be surprising for DBZ fans. It may have been part of the expectation that the first release was closer to how the author Toriyama created it for so many years. However, if you thoroughly scrutinize the specifics of what lines were said on Kai, you will see how closely it is with what the author has written which is also the original plan for this series. Racism is also not allowed. That is why when Kai was aired, everything related to those mentioned was either toned down or cut. Though they removed many things, all fights were retained, including the special beam cannon attack.  Footage When it comes to footage, there isn't much that has changed. As everyone knows, this is a revision, so whatever portion of Dragon Ball Z that was not shown that good is simply enhanced to lure in more people to follow. The dub on the original version may be a bit on the low side, but you can be sure that the footage is not squashed that much when it comes to footage.  Voice Actors Luckily, important voices remained, such as Sean Schemmel, who first dubbed the funimation in 1999 in Cartoon Network. With Kai, he continued to bring life to the same character. However, some roles had to be represented by different voice actors, such as Kid Gohan, Trunks, and Android 19. The voice actors are understandable not to be the same since some have already passed on and others are unavailable. FAQs Can I watch Dragonball Kai without watching DBZ? Yes, you can start watching Kai without going through any Dragon Ball Z episode if you want more manga vibes, per se. This version is more faithful to what the author of the original script has written compared to Dragon Ball Z.  Dragon Ball Z or Kai, which has a bigger budget? Dragon Ball Z Kai has the bigger budget even though it has a shorter span. It only has 153 total chapters compared to the 291 of DBZ, but enhancing all the low-budget images into HD quality costs more. They also made total alterations to abide by the instructions provided to avoid banning the program.  And the Winner Is...  Dragon Ball Z will always be the winner if these two are compared. Let’s all find out.  Dragonball Z: An Overview Everything started in 1984 when Akira Toriyama created the manga series Dragon ball or Doragon Bōru. There were 519 individual chapters written and printed, and there are 42 tankōbon volumes that ran from 1984 up to 1995. Having 6.53 million sales weekly is more than enough indication that it will be a hit when turned into a TV Series.  Dragonball Anime (1) Series was first aired in 1986 which lasted until April of 1989 after 153 episodes. The next airing time, Dragonball Z was introduced, which depicted the adult life of Goku and his friends. How Many Episodes Does It Have?  Anime Series The first Dragonball series had 153 episodes, which succeeded with the 291 episodes from Dragonball Z, from 1986 to 1996. All were adaptations from Akira Toriyama's Manga Series, Dragonball. The success of the anime led to another series. This time, it is Dragonball GT. It came out with 64 episodes but not based on the original Manga Series.  What came next is a continuation to the manga (2) adaptation with 131 episodes, Dragonball Super. There was only one live-action film released, Dragonball: Evolution, which remains the only licensed live-action film. The similarity between Ursula and Phoebe ends with the physique.  Although Pheebs was a bit eccentric, she was never evil like Ursula. Remember how she used Pheebs to pursue her career in adult entertainment? Or even insulted Phoebe by dating Joey? Ursula was the worst! Frank Jr. Ross and Monica were great siblings, but Frank Buffay Jr. and Phoebe were an entirely different story. They were both eccentric, although Frank got the longer end of the stick in this regard.  Despite the quirks, he was a faithful man to his incredibly older partner. Nevertheless, thanks to his character, we were able to witness one of the weirdest storylines ever -- Phoebe’s pregnancy. Susan Bunch & Carol Willick Susan and Carol are the two people behind Ross’ fear of marital relationships. Story plots aside, they were great representations in an era where the LGBTQ+ were treated unequally.  Friends was pivotal to show two strong women raising their son alongside Ross. Eventually, they patch things up and remain friends, which is healthy, especially for the young Ben. The two also had some awesome moments with the six friends. Estelle Leonard “Hey, Joey! It's Estelle.” Who can ever forget these iconic lines from Joey’s manager? Although she appeared seldom and popped out on the screen only when making phone calls to Joey, she was the one who supported his acting career.  Although she died one faithful day, she is sorely missed by the people she left behind. One of them is good ol’ Tribbiani. Jack & Judy Geller Jack and Judy Geller were also an awesome duo in the show. Although true, they made the life of Monica a tad bit miserable, but this made her a stronger and more independent person. The relationship between them and their daughter is so relatable to the audience.  Not every child has great connections with their parents, but Monica handled it perfectly. It was never revealed why Judy Geller is contentious of her daughter, but perhaps underneath that cloak of disapproval is a hidden love. Richard Burke Richard Burke appeared for no more than ten episodes in the entire Friends series, but he sure left a colossal impact (no pun intended). He was not only a partner but also a sympathetic father figure to Ross’ sister.  He’s a classy, sophisticated, and mature guy that keeps Monica’s choleric impulses under control. Richard was a great character; albeit he appeared briefly, he sure was remembered positively by the friends and people watching. Gunther Many remember Gunther as that stoic coffee dude in Central Perk. Stoic because he remained faithful to Rachel after the countless times he’d seen her with another guy; provided, Rachel never even once knew Gunther had feelings for her. Gunther’s subtle stints in the show were fun to watch. Some might even find it cute that he has a little crush on her. But if there’s one thing about him that is commendable; it is that he didn’t make a move on Rachel when they were co-workers. That would’ve been inappropriate! Mike Hannigan Mike Hannigan appeared later in Friends, but he sure made an impact, especially on Phoebe’s life. With his short time in Friends, Paul Rudd’s Mike Hannigan made one of the best love interests in the entire show. Falling head over heels on Pheebs and getting married in the snow is a satisfying conclusion to their relationship. It might look weird to see Paul Rudd so young into the show, but he surely did great with his character. The Golden Girls’ actual ages were never revealed on the classic sitcom, but die-hard fans (us included!) were able to put two and two together based on the clues left behind on each episode.  We’ll see how our favorite Golden Girls’ on-screen ages fare against their actual ages in real life.  Golden Girls: How Old Were They?   The ages of the Golden Girls were never explicitly stated in the sitcom. However, it’s known that the show's timeline began in 1985, the same year it first aired, and each of the seven seasons took place seven years in the timeline.  Part of the charm of the Golden Girls sitcom was the characters themselves. Older women were often stereotyped as homebodies, not much good for anything else other than baking cookies and rocking in their chairs while knitting. And while we do see Rose, Dorothy, Sophia, and Blanche bonding over their shared love for cooking -- boy, did they have wilder adventures than us!  When Did The Show Start?  Golden Girls is over 35 years old, having first debuted on September 14, 1985… yet it still finds a way to attract young and old audiences. Her actual age was never stated, but her mother, Sophia, tells Dorothy in “Nothing to Fear but Fear of Himself” (Season 3, Episode 5) about the night Dorothy was conceived in 1931. In a subsequent episode “Stan Takes a Wife” (Season 4, Episode 10), Dorothy reveals that she is a Leo.  This gives us a safe guess as to when her birthday is. She was born in either late July or early August in 1932, making her 53 at the beginning of the series. Bea Arthur, who played Dorothy, was 63 in the first season. As Dorothy’s mother, she often uses her age as leverage to prove a point over the younger Golden Girls. In a flashback episode “A Piece of Cake” (Season 2, Episode 25), Sophia celebrated her 50th birthday in 1956.  However, did you know that the actress who played Sophia was actually one year younger than Betty White and Bea Arthur (her on-screen daughter)? It took the makeup artists at least 45 minutes to age Estelle Getty into Sophia during filming!  Blanche Devereaux (Rue McClanahan) Rue McClanahan played Blanche Devereaux, a character so adamant about people not finding out her real age that she had it removed from official records. When Rose dug through files, she found out this character’s age had been “deleted by Authority of the Governor.”  The mystery of Blanche Devereaux’s age has become sort of a running joke throughout the series, but we were able to pick up a few clues. In “End of the Curse” (Season 2, Episode 1), Blanche believes she might be pregnant and claims that she’ll be 65 by the time the child graduates high school. Assuming the child will graduate at 17, this makes Blanche 48 in 1986, and 47 at the start of the series.  However, this assumption was thrown out of the window when “Mother’s Day” (Season 3, Episode 25) aired. Blanche’s mother confirms that she was 17 years old in 1949 as they were reminiscing over Blanche’s past dates. Considering how simply Blanche lied to her housemates about how old she was and how Sophia called her out, it’s alright to assume that she was 53 in the series pilot.  Rue McClanahan wasn’t too far behind in terms of age; the actress was only one year younger at 52 when she started playing her character Blanche. One Flew Out of the Cuckoo's Nest Part 1 & 2 (Season 7, Episode 25 and 26)   The two-part series finale ranks as our favorite episode. It is beautifully heartwarming yet heartbreaking at times because we know it’s the last we’ll see of the Golden Girls.  The episode starts with Blanche dumping her Uncle Lucas (played by Leslie Nielsen) with Dorothy on a blind date, as she had a date planned prior and could not accommodate him. Blanche’s uncle and Dorothy start unsure, but as they get to know each other, they find out that Blanche has been telling them untrue stories about the other. The two seek revenge on Blanche by pretending to fall in love with each other.  Blanche is furious that Dorothy might end up being her aunt, and while the ruse is happening, Lucas and Dorothy develop romantic feelings for real. Lucas and Dorothy decide to be truthful to Blanche, not wanting to hurt her any longer, and Blanche gives her uncle and her best friend her blessing.  Two months later, Dorothy and Lucas get married, and Dorothy gets Blanche and Rose as her bridesmaids. Sophia tearfully lets her go and promises to stay and take care of Blanche and Rose in Miami.  Guest star Leslie Nielsen delivered a powerful performance in this episode, and we wish we’d seen more of him!  But are the Golden Girls still alive? 2. Letter to Gorbachev (Season 3, Episode 6)   Letter to Gorbachev tells the tale of how Rose touched the heart of Russian president Mikhail Gorbachev. She decides to send the Russian president a letter about ending the nuclear war. It is one of the most imaginative episodes of the Golden Girls.  An official of the Russian Embassy named Alexi Bovanov came to their home to look for Rose Nylund and told her that a press conference would be held in her honor to talk about world peace. Before and After (Season 2, Episode 15)   In this episode, sweet Rose faces a near-death experience that leaves her determined to change her entire lifestyle and, consequently, her friends. She realizes that it’s a miserable life without true friends and decides to move back to the girls’ home.  4. Mrs. George Deveraux (Season 6, Episode 9)   Mrs. George Deveraux was one of the sitcom’s best episodes. Blanche receives flowers from a secret admirer, who turns out to be her late husband, George Deveraux (played by George Grizzard). Blanche is shocked -- after all, her husband had been dead for nine years in a car crash. George tells her that he faked his death because he found out that his business partner had been stealing from their company and was blaming him.  They share a touching kiss, but the audience soon discovers that everything was something Blanche concocted in a dream. Never Yell Fire in a Crowd Parts 1&2 (Season 6, Episode 24 and 25)   In the penultimate episode of season 6, Rose, Dorothy, and Blanche fear that Sophia might get sent to jail when a former Shady Pines Retirement Home resident dies and pins her and Sophia as the culprit of the fire. Sick and Tired Part 1 and 2 (Season 5, Episode 1 and 2)   The series was considered way ahead of its time when they tackled mental illness in Sick and Tired, one of their best episodes. Dorothy had been to several doctors; however, they all but dismissed her. They all told her “it’s all in her head” when she asked them for a reason as to why she felt sick and tired all the time. The last straw came when one of the doctors told her that she just needed to try something new to “break the cycle,” like color her hair blond.  Hopeless, Dorothy tries one last time to get another doctor’s opinion; this time, she is advised to go to a specialist. The specialist diagnosed her with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, a real illness -- the series creator Susan Harris was afflicted by it when she co-wrote this episode.  Bea Arthur’s performance in this episode was truly remarkable. The Mangiacavallo Curse Makes a Lousy Wedding Present (Season 5, Episode 23)   The wedding of Jenny, Dorothy’s goddaughter, is fast approaching. Rose, Dorothy, and Blanche are frustrated because they can’t get dates; on the other hand, Sophia is determined to show up looking good because a beau from her past, Giuseppe Mangiacavallo, is expected to be there. She holds a grudge against him for leaving her at the altar 70 years ago.  Since then, Sophia has put a curse on Mangiacavallo, and tells him at the wedding that she has planned for all the happiness of the day to “come crashing down on your head.” Mangiacavallo scoffs and doesn’t believe her until the newlyweds get into a fight that threatens to ruin the reception.  Mangiacavallo asks Sophia to forgive him, and she lifts the curse off.  13. The Case of the Libertine Belle (Season 7, Episode 2)   “The Case of the Libertine Belle” is a known fan-favorite episode due to its gripping mystery feel. Blanche invites the rest of the Golden Girls over to her company’s murder-mystery weekend outing. Dorothy solves the puzzle single-handedly, and everyone applauds her.  Meanwhile, Blanche gets involved in a real murder mystery weekend, and it’s up to Dorothy and her sleuthing skills to clear her name.  14. The Sisters (Season 2, Episode 12)   Sophia’s birthday is coming up, and Dorothy struggles to find the perfect present for her. After Blanche confronts him, he reveals that he is an illegitimate son of her late husband, which hurts her, as she had remained faithful to George while they had been together.  17. 72 Hours (Season 5, Episode 19)   “72 Hours” episode features a progressive take on a sensitive subject that was considered taboo at the time: HIV. Rose is afraid that she may have gotten HIV from a blood transfusion she had undergone several years ago and has to wait 72 hours to receive the result.  Blanche comforts Rose and tells her that she went through the same thing, but she’s learned her lesson and makes sure to know about her partner’s sexual history and to use protection. Rose is stressed and insults Blanche’s sex life; she claims she is “too good” to have gotten this virus. Blanche reminds her that getting HIV is not a punishment from God and that having the virus doesn’t mean you are a bad person.  18. Sophia's Wedding Parts 1 and 2 (Season 4, Episodes 5 and 6)   In “Sophia’s Wedding,” Sophia learns of her late husband’s business partner’s wife’s death and heads over to Brooklyn to pay her respects. She remains antagonistic to Max Weinstock (played by Jack Gilford), who she believes had squandered away all of her husband’s fortunes. She finds out that it had been her husband and not Max who was at fault, and he was merely covering for him. The two hook up… and decide to get married right then and there, much to Dorothy’s dismay.  They get a house by the beach and turn it into a pizza and knish stand, which their late beloveds had always wanted. When the store catches fire and burns down, the two realize that they didn’t want to run a pizza and knish stand, much less stay married to each other... and the two amicably part ways.  19. Mister Terrific (Season 3, Episode 24)   Rose meets television star Mr. Terrific at a local mall, who asks her out on a date the same evening. When he comes over to the girls’ house that night, he offers Dorothy an excellent opportunity: to become a consultant on his show!  Dorothy shows up on her first day of work and makes brilliant suggestions to the show’s producer, ultimately getting Mr. Terrific fired. It isn't her intention at all, but seeing how her actions affected Mr. Terrific, she convinces the producer to bring him back on air. The episode takes a turn for the worse when she is chosen to replace Mr. Terrific as the host of the program! 20. Brother, Can You Spare that Jacket? (Season 4, Episode 8)   The Golden Girls are ecstatic when they discover that the lottery ticket they bought cost $10,000, which they hide in Blanche’s jacket. Sophia mistakenly puts the jacket inside a box meant for goodwill, and the four girls race around the state on a “follow that jacket” course.  21. Old Friends (Season 3, Episode 1)   Estelle Getty, who played Sophia Petrillo, showcased her acting chops and won an Emmy for her performance in “Old Friends” (aside from that episode when Sophia’s son dies). Sophia establishes a friendship with Alvin (played by Joe Seneca), a man she meets at the beach, with whom she quickly shares a unique bond as they relate to each other over their children and late spouses.
